Declaration for the Promotion of Research (Kyoto Declaration)

November 10, 2024

The societies of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) are diverse and complex, therefore, deep knowledge and insight are required to understand and find solutions to the challenges facing the region. We seek to encourage and contribute to the development of social scientific research on LAC and those who originate from the region.

Promotion of research

We respect the backgrounds, theories, methods, and countries/regions of research of our members, and strive for mutual enlightenment by evaluating each other’s research results through discussion. In cooperation with other academic associations, we will contribute to the development of area studies.

Promotion of education

We will strive to share knowledge among our members so that the educational curriculum of LAC research will be expanded in universities and other educational institutions, and students will have greater opportunities to experience the society, history, and culture of LAC.

Fostering Young Researchers

We will support young researchers and encourage their research activities. We will foster original perspectives and new ideas through award programs and exchange programs.

Promoting International Research Cooperation

We will strengthen cooperation with researchers and research organizations around the world to promote joint research and academic exchange.

Promoting Public Relations

We will disseminate research results to policy makers, businesses, and the general public in accessible language to enhance society’s understanding of LAC, provide a forum for exchange among people involved in LAC in a wide range of fields, and strive to express opinions that contribute to Japan’s involvement in LAC.

On the occasion of our 60th anniversary, we pledge through this Declaration to spread the importance of research on LAC and to jointly deepen our knowledge.
